Common questions

macOS will not let me open the app after downloading.

The DMG is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper should let it open on first launch. If macOS still blocks it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the “Security” section, and click Open Anyway next to the trace prompt. If you see a corrupted-download warning, redownload the DMG — the file was likely interrupted mid-transfer.

trace is not capturing my microphone or system audio.

On macOS, trace needs two permissions: Microphone and System Audio Recording Only (the latter lets us capture the other side of a meeting via the CoreAudio Process Tap on macOS 14.2+). Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and confirm trace is enabled in both lists. If you grant the permissions while trace is already running, quit and relaunch the app so the changes take effect.

My meeting was not auto-detected.

trace watches for which app is actively capturing your microphone (Zoom, Chrome, FaceTime, Slack, Microsoft Teams, etc.) and offers a capture prompt when it sees one. If a meeting is not detected, you can always start a recording manually from the “Capture Context” button or the menu bar tray.

The recording finished but the transcript is empty.

This usually means the microphone or system-audio stream produced silent (zero-byte) frames during the recording — most often when another app held an exclusive lock on the audio device. Quit other audio-using apps (browsers other than the meeting tab, voice recorders, virtual audio routers), check that Microphone and System Audio Recording Only are still granted, and try again. If it keeps happening, email us with your macOS version and the affected meeting app.

I cannot sign in.

Sign-in is via Google only. Tap “Continue with Google” and pick the Google account you want trace tied to. If Google returns an error, confirm you have access to that account in your browser, then try again. If it still fails, email us with the Google account you are trying to use.

How do I get the iOS app?

The iOS app is in beta. Email adhyan@usetrace.ai with the Apple ID you would like added and we will send you an invite.

How do I delete my account and data?

Email adhyan@usetrace.ai from the email you registered with, or include that email in your request. We permanently delete your account row, recordings, transcripts, summaries, knowledge-graph entities, and Ask Trace history within 30 days. See the Privacy Policy for the full list of what is removed.

Is trace a clinical, legal, or financial advice tool?

No. trace summarises your discussions using large language models for personal context capture. Summaries, decisions, and Ask Trace answers are auto-generated and may contain errors. They are not professional advice. Treat them as a memory aid, not a source of truth — review the underlying transcript before acting on anything important.

Report a bug

Email adhyan@usetrace.ai with: which app (macOS or iOS), the app version, your OS version, what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened. Screenshots and short screen recordings help a lot.
